I’ve written posts upon posts about the company I work for but it seems that I’ve never addressed the overarching question. So here it is folks; the question that is asked more than any other question I receive:“what is VIPKID?”

VIPKID是什么样的公司?

VIPKIDis an online English teaching company. This company caters to Chinese ESL students ranging in age from 3 to 15 years old and they currently have headquarters in Beijing, China and San Francisco, USA.

VIPKID started in late 2013 and has since seen exponential growth. There are over 500,000 students that take classes with VIPKID and more than 65,000 VIPKID teachers. Classes are conducted seven days per week(365 days per year)and the platform sees more than 180,000 completed classes each day.

Classes are 1-on-1 and currently last 25 minutes. Curricula is created by VIPKID and the teachers simply deliver the material.

Is VIPKID A Legitimate Company?

Is VIPKID a legitimate company? Do they actually pay their teachers? Do teachers actually receive classes to fill their schedules? These are common questions asked by those curious about this remote work opportunity.

Before I started with VIPKID, I was curious about this too. It seemed too good to be true, which is why it took me several years to finally complete the application process.

As it turns out, VIPKID is a completely legitimate company. I currently teach 25-40 hours per week, depending on my travel schedule. I’ve never missed a paycheck from them and things have always been very professional.

As a multi-billion dollar company, VIPKID keeps business legal and consistent. They are continuously monitored by the Ministry of Education in China and must obey any education laws set by the People’s Republic of China.

And for more peace of mind, VIPKID ranks as one of the top companies in the world for online work. They are currently leading the way in online education programs throughout the entire world.

Do You Need A Degree For VIPKID?

Just like any other job, VIPKID has a certain set of requirements for their teachers. There are three main requirements that must be met in order to complete the application process:

1. A Bachelor’s Degree

Your Bachelor’s degree can be in any subject from an accredited university.

Note:many aspiring teachers ask if extensive experience working with children will suffice in the hiring process if they don’t hold a Bachelor’s degree.Unfortunately, it does not.VIPKID is very strict about this requirement, as is the Ministry of Education in China.

2. The Legal Right To Work In The US or Canada

VIPKID is looking for native English speakers with a neutral accent. You’ll need to have a tax ID from the US or Canada to be considered for this position.

Note:Based on recent laws that were passed in California, New York, and Washington state regarding independent contracting work, VIPKID no longer hires teachers from these states.

3. One Year of Experience Working With Children

This could be any kind of experience with children: teaching, mentoring, babysitting, nannying, coaching, you name it!

How Much Do You Get Paid With VIPKID?

There are many factors that go into calculating any given teacher’s pay. But for reference, most teachers make $20-22 per hour.

Thanks to incentives for picking up more classes and showing up to lessons on time, it’s rare that any teacher makes less than $18 per hour.

I currently make $21 per hour and I’m able to fit two classes into an hour. My monthly paychecks hover around $2,500-3,000 depending on how much I decide to teach.

Teachers are paid weekly, biweekly, or monthly depending on their preference. We can be paid via PayPal or direct deposit(I choose the latter because it’s easier).

How Many Hours Can You Work With VIPKID?

The working hours for VIPKID begin at 8:30 am and conclude at 10:00 pm Beijing Time. Classes are conducted seven days per week, 365 days per year.

Most teachers will see their schedules fill up during peak and peak-peak hours. These are the times when classes are in the highest demand. This lasts from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm Beijing Time.

Unfortunately, Beijing is 13-16 hours ahead of the United States. This means teachers must prepare to teach during strange hours of the day.

Is there a minimum or maximum amount of hours you can work?

Since teachers sign on as independent contractors, we are in complete control of our schedules. That means we can work as many or as little hours as we’d like.

Your schedule can change week to week and you don’t have to decide your teaching schedule until you’re ready. For example, some weeks I have my plans laid out. When that happens, I schedule my classes a week in advance. However, if I’mtravelingand I’m unsure of my schedule, I wait until the night before to open classes. The flexibility of this job can’t be beaten.

Does VIPKID Take Out Taxes?

As independent contractors, VIPKID teachers are responsible for their own taxes. Because of this, I recommend putting aside 25-30% of each paycheck you earn.

What Is It Like Working For VIPKID?

As with any job, there are pros and cons to working with this company. It’s no secret that I enjoy controlling my own work schedule and having the flexibility to work from anywhere in the world(as long as I have WiFi). The kids are wonderful(most of them)and the relationships I build with these families are irreplaceable.

But that doesn’t mean that working for VIPKID is perfect. Waking up to teach during prime Beijing hours can be tiring, the hiring process is a bit daunting, and there are many times when I feel like VIPKID will blame the teacher if something goes haywire during class(IT issues).

For me, the pros of this job outweigh the negatives by far; I wouldn’t work for a company if the negatives outweighed the positives. I am content working for VIPKID and feel that they’ve got things under complete control.
