Mount Srd Hike: Dubrovnik’s Most Scenic Hike
We spent several weeks roaming around the quaint coastal town of Dubrovnik, Croatia. From the romantic Old City to the beautiful beaches, we loved every minute of our stay. But the one thing we loved the most about Dubrovnik was the hike up to Mount Srd.
Find the best panoramic views of Dubrovnik from the top of Mount Srd, a short hike from the city center. We loved these views so much that we hiked to the top nearly every day.

I even recommend this hike for families. Throughout our treks to the top, we saw several families with young children completing this hike.
The Start Of The Mount Srd Hike

When you approach the location of the trailhead, you’ll see the signs from the picture below. Follow the trail toward Imperijal Srd. This will take you to the summit.
Getting To The Trailhead
For us, it was easiest to walk to the trailhead. No matter where you are located in Dubrovnik, walking to the Mount Srd trailhead shouldn’t be more than 45 minutes away.
Since the hike to the top of Mount Srd is only 1-2 hours, we liked to add this extra distance. Walking to the trailhead and back to our Airbnb added an extra hour and a half to our hike; the perfect day hike.
For some, this doesn’t seem like an easy option. No problem! There are many ways to reach the trailhead of Mount Srd. Taxis roam around Dubrovnik regularly. Catch a short 5-10 minute ride to the trailhead to cut off any additional distance.
Another option is to take the bus to the trailhead. Conveniently, there is a bus stop located directly next to the start of the Mount Srd hike.
Climbing Mount Srd, Dubrovnik
As I mentioned before, hiking to the top of Dubrovnik isn’t too difficult.
To begin, you’ll walk up several switchbacks that lead you through a forested area. We were excited to see a farmer herding his cattle through these woods during one of our hikes. It made us feel miles and miles away from any big city.
Continue up the switchbacks, which quickly turn rocky. Take caution during this section of the hike as the large rocks can be difficult to walk on. I suggest wearing a quality pair of athletic shoes during your trek. We saw several girls walking to the top in high heels and we cringed at the thought of how badly their feet were hurting.
One of the best parts about this hike is that you’ll be able to see expansive views of Dubrovnik within the first 10 minutes. The view of the Old City from the trail is unmatched and by far the best location to see it from above.
It typically takes us around 30 minutes to summit Mount Srd, but we are avid hikers and do this regularly. Allow yourself 45 minutes to an hour to climb; you won’t be disappointed with what you find at the top.
The Top of Mount Srd – Homeland War Museum
Dubrovnik, as well as the entire Balkan Peninsula, has been affected by devastating war within the past several decades. The war museum that sits atop of Mount Srd helps paint a picture of what life was like in Dubrovnik during the Croatian War that occurred from 1991-1995.
Spend some time learning about how this war has affected the entire Balkan region. Learning about these wars and hardships ultimately helps travelers respect the culture and people of the Balkan Peninsula.
The price to enter the Dubrovnik War Museum is relatively cheap at just30HRK per adult ($4.50 USD).
Mount Srd Hike For Sunset
Sure, hiking Mount Srd at any time of the day promises an amazing experience. But hiking Mount Srd for sunset is absolutely spectacular. If you get the chance to hike up Mount Srd, be sure to do it for sunset.
Begin your hike approximately one hour before the sunsets. At the top, you’ll realize that this is a popular location to see the sun dip below the horizon. Tour groups unload by the van-full.
To experience the sunset in solitude, take the path just north of the war museum. This will lead you to an isolated area where you’ll be able to watch the show in peace. This is also the best location to take photographs because you won’t have the cable car in view.
If you choose to hike Mount Srd for sunset, be sure to bring a flashlight or headlamp with you for the hike back down. Although Dubrovnik is well-lit, this trail is not. The rocky path can be treacherous in the dark.
What To Pack For The Mount Srd Hike
There are several things you should consider before hiking to the top of Mount Srd. These are the things we found useful to bring with us in our daypacks:
1. Water
Just like any hike, packing water is essential. Although it’s only 3 miles in length, the heat from the sun will quickly dehydrate any hiker. Take a water bottle with you; you’ll thank me later.
2. Snacks
Although this is a pretty light hike, it’s always good to refuel your body. Pick up a few snacks at the convenience store before you venture to the top. Take some time to eat and enjoy the views when you reach the summit.
3. Camera
Some say that the best pictures of Dubrovnik are shot in the Old City. I disagree. Be sure to bring your camera to the top of Mount Srd to capture these stunning sights.
4. Extra jacket
During the summer months, an extra jacket might be unnecessary. But since the Mount Srd hike is accessible year-round, you’ll want to pack an extra jacket for the top if you go during winter.
This is especially true if you decide to hike this trail for sunset. When we started our hike, the weather was perfectly warm. As the sun was setting, I completely froze.
More Hikes On Mount Srd
During one of our hikes to the top of Mount Srd, we decided to venture off the main path. Just north of the war museum, there are several trails that lead you in the direction of the Rijeka Inlet.
These paths will take you through several old ruins. Our favorite part was exploring these ruins with the sweeping views of mountains and farms in the background.
If you have time to spare, take these paths and see what you can find.
More Ways To Reach The Top Of Mount Srd
Understandably, hiking isn’t for everyone. Luckily, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the views from the top of Dubrovnik. Along with hiking, there are several other ways to reach the summit of Mount Srd.
Cable Car
The first option is to take the cable car to the top of Mount Srd. This is one of the moreunique experiences in Dubrovnikand I’ve heard wonderful things about it.
The price to take the cable car to the top of Mount Srd is a bit steep at 170 kunas per person roundtrip (approximately $25 USD).
Before you go, check the timetable to be sure that the cable car is in service. During the summer months, the cable car remains open until midnight. These hours drastically decrease in the winter and in February the cable car doesn’t run at all.
Drive
Another option that will get you to the top of Mount Srd is to drive. Whether you decide to rent a car or hire a driver, the route to the top only takes a couple of minutes.
