Tahiti To Moorea Ferry 2023: Affordable & Easy Transportation Option

LOOKING TO TAKE THE FERRY FROM TAHITI TO MOOREA IN FRENCH POLYNESIA?

Moorea is a paradise island off the coast of Tahiti. Both islands are part of French Polynesia, one of the most beautiful archipelagos in the world.

Planning a trip to Moorea can be overwhelming. How do we access such remote island locations? In this post, you’ll learn everything you need to know about taking the ferry from Tahiti to Moorea.

How Do You Get To Moorea From Tahiti?

To access the island of Moorea, you’ll first need to fly into the capital of French Polynesia, Papeete(pronounced Pah-pee-yet-ay). Papeete is located on the biggest of the French Polynesian islands, Tahiti.

Since Tahiti is just 10 nautical miles from Moorea, it’s relatively easy and cheap to move between these islands.

Here are the two main ways to get to Moorea from Tahiti:

1. Tahiti to MooreaBy Plane

Let’s start with the most expensive option..flying from Tahiti to Moorea.

There is one airline that covers the route from Tahiti to Moorea(and back),and it’s called Air Tahiti. If you want to visit Bora Bora或任何其他法国波利尼西亚岛,你也会use this airline.

The trip from Tahiti to Moorea by airplane takes 15 minutes, and Air Tahiti offers two of these non-stop flights per day.

Note:This might seem like the most logical option because it only takes 15 minutes, but remember to calculate the time it takes to drive to the airport, go through security, and wait for your flight.

Round-trip airfare from Tahiti to Mooreacan cost anywhere from $100 to well over $400 depending on the time of year.

And unfortunately, you will almost certainly need to stay the night in Tahiti before departing for Moorea. This is because most international flights into Tahiti do not coordinate with Air Tahiti’s schedule.

But if you’re sold on flying, we highly recommend usingSkyscannerto book your airline tickets. You can find out how we purchase the cheapest airline tickets in this post:7 Skyscanner Tricks For Booking The Cheapest Flights.

The Two Options: Aremiti Vs. Terevau

If you decide to take the ferry from Tahiti to Moorea, you can choose between two companies, Aremiti and Terevau. Both sail this specific route several times per day, so you can choose a time that works best for your schedule.

Here are details about both ferry companies:

1.Aremiti Ferry

This is the ferry we decided to take from Tahiti to Moorea.Aremitiruns two different ferries: the Aremiti 6 and the Aremiti Ferry 2.

The Aremiti Ferry 2 can transport vehicles while the Aremiti 6 only holds passengers. If you choose to take a rental car from Tahiti to Moorea, be sure to look at the Aremiti schedule to determine which routes allow vehicles.

Aremiti Schedule

Aremiti sails between Tahiti and Moorea 7-10 times per day starting at about 5:55 am. The last Aremiti ferry to leave Tahiti for Moorea is at 5:30 pm(except Sundays, which has a 6:10 pm option).

To check the exact schedule and find the right time for you, check the Aremiti website here:Aremiti Timetable.

Aremiti Ferry Price

Two of the most frequently asked questions about taking the ferry from Tahiti to Moorea are: “do I need a reservation? How much will this cost?”

Taking the Aremiti Ferry costs about $15 USD per adult for a one-way ticket. Children and seniors cost approximately $10 USD one-way.

Every ticket will be valid for a year after it’s purchased. There are no reservations, so you simply show up for the ferry you’d like to take and show them your ticket.

Note:It’s best to show up 20-30 minutes prior to departure. Inside the ferry terminal in Tahiti, there is a nice restaurant that looks out over the ocean on the second floor. Grab a snack before boarding or you can hang out in the waiting area(also on the second floor).

2.Terevau Ferry

The second ferry company you can take isTerevau. This ferry company also allows vehicles on some routes.

We did not take Terevau, so I cannot speak on the quality of their ferries from personal experience, but I’ve heard good things. Not to mention, you’ll only be on the boat for 30 minutes anyway.

Terevau Schedule

Terevau sails between Tahiti and Moorea 5-7 times per day depending on the day of the week. This gives you plenty of options to choose from so that it fits your schedule.

The first Terevau Ferry typically leaves Tahiti at 6:40 am and the final ferry leaves at 5:25 pm. This gives you several options to choose from.

For up-to-date departures, be sure to check out their website:Terevau Schedules.

Terevau Ferry Price

Terevau每人费用约11美元or a one-way ticket. Children cost about $6 USD and seniors will pay close to $10 USD. This is significantly cheaper than flying.

Each ticket will remain valid for 6 months after it’s purchased. This means you can use it whenever you’d like. Again, there are no reservations, so you simply show up, provide your ticket, and get on the ferry.

Which Ferry Is Better?

Both the Aremiti and Terevau ferries have their pros and cons.

Of course, Terevau is usually cheaper than Aremiti, which is a big plus. On the other hand, Aremiti offers more trips per day, which could fit into your travel schedule better.

We really enjoyed Aremiti, but if we were to do it again, we wouldn’t mind trying the Terevau Ferry due to its budget-friendly prices.

Both ferries are updated and clean. We felt very comfortable inside and remember, the ride is very short; even if you don’t like it, it will be over really quickly.

How To Buy Your Tickets

There are two ways that you can buy ferry tickets: online or in person. Both options are really simple. Here’s what you need to know:

Book Tickets Online

For us, we wanted to have everything finished and ready to go when we arrived in Tahiti, so we opted to purchase our ferry tickets online. The websites below are in bothFrenchand English.

You can do the same by clicking here:AremitiorTerevau.

We printed out our tickets but of course, we lost them before we got to the terminal(go figure). This was no problem because we were able to use our phones to show our tickets.

Be sure to have your ticket saved as a PDF on your phone or take a screenshot of it to show the ferry attendant. Remember, you may not get cell phone service because you’ll be in a different country.

Book Tickets In Person

The other option is to purchase your ferry tickets in person at the Tahiti ferry terminal.

To do this, go up to the ticket window about 30-45 minutes before the ferry is supposed to depart. You can find the ticket window underneath the massive carport that is attached to the terminal.

This will be the side of the terminal that you’ll approach if you’re coming from the airport, so it’s easy to find.

Are There Seat Assignments On The Ferry?

There are no seat assignments for either the Aremiti Ferry or the Terevau Ferry. You’ll simply show up, board the ferry, and find a spot that is comfortable for you.

There are plenty of seats, tables, and outdoor standing areas if you would rather check out the scenery.

How Do I Get From The Tahiti Airport To The Ferry?

Here’s the thing.. it’s very unlikely that you’ll be arriving in Tahiti in time to catch a ferry OR a flight to Moorea. They do this on purpose so that tourists spend time in Papeete before leaving for other islands.

So, the chances of you going directly from the airport to the ferry terminal are slim.

With that said, if you’re one of the lucky ones that has a flight arriving in time to catch a ferry, you can get from the airport to theferry terminal by taxi.

The airport is about two miles from the ferry terminal and it takes about 10 minutes to get there by car.

The price of a taxi from the Tahiti Airport to the ferry terminal is approximately $20-25 USD. This might seem steep(because it is)but you’re in French Polynesia and unfortunately, that is the common rate for taxis.

Note:You can also rent a car from the airport and drive it to the ferry terminal if you plan on bringing a rental car over to Moorea. Not only would it save you money on taxis, but you’ll get a much better deal by renting a car in Tahiti as opposed to Moorea.

Where Is The Tahiti Ferry Terminal?

The Papeete Ferry Terminal is located near the city center and close to all of the most popular shops and restaurants.

We struggled to find the exact location but eventually found it. Look for a big building where ships are docked. It will also help to have your GPS pulled up so you can follow it directly to the terminal.

Note:Be sure to pull up directions BEFORE you leave your accommodation or any location that has WiFi. If you don’t have an international phone, you won’t be able to use Google Maps directions.

In order to save money on taxi rides, we stayed in an Airbnb close to the ferry terminal and walked there.

If you don’t plan on staying near the ferry terminal, you can call for a taxi to bring you to the ferry terminal. Don’t worry about the language barrier. The majority of people in Tahiti speak English in addition to their native language(French).

Where Is The Moorea Ferry Terminal?

When you arrive in Moorea, you’ll be on the east side of the island.

The best way to get from the port toyour accommodationis by asking your host to schedule a taxi for you. A large majority of hosts(both hotel and Airbnb)will gladly do this for you.

On the off-chance that your host won’t set up a taxi for you, use our friend’s taxi service, Tamatoa Taxi. This was by far the most reasonably priced taxi on the island and he is so kind.

You can reach him here:

Phone + Whatsapp: +689 87 21 23 24
Email: lihip.tam@gmail.com

He speaks fluent English, so there’s no language barrier to worry about either.

If you’re staying at the Sofitel or anywhere in Te’avaro or Temae, you’re in luck! It should only take about 5 minutes to get from the ferry to your new Moorea home.

If you are staying in the heart of the action(Maharepa, Piha’ena, or Tiahura), it will take a little longer to get there. Expect a 15 to 25-minute car ride along the coast if you’re staying in one of those neighborhoods.

Day Trips To Moorea By Ferry

Moorea and Tahiti are very close in distance, which means day trips between the two islands are definitely possible.

While we were in Moorea, our Airbnb host frequently took the ferry across to Tahiti for doctor appointments. It’s really simple and easy to do.

If you want to take a day trip from Tahiti to Moorea, we suggest going on the first ferry of the day. To put it lightly, Moorea is magnificent and you’ll want to spend as much time there as possible.

Rent a car for the day and check out some of thebest things to do in Mooreabefore catching the last ferry back to Tahiti.

Whether you want to lounge on perfectlywhite sand beachesorgo hikingfor views like the one in the picture above, Moorea has it all.

Note:We actually recommend spending more than one day in Moorea if possible. We stayed for two months and even that didn’t seem like enough time.

Are There Any Ferries To Bora Bora?

Unfortunately, there are no ferry services between the islands of Tahiti and Bora Bora.

Since Tahiti is a Windward Island and Bora Bora is a Leeward Island, they are not close enough in distance to reach by ferry.

In order toget from Tahiti or Moorea to Bora Bora, you will need to fly with Air Tahiti. Prices range from $300 to well over $600 depending on the time of year. Take this into account if you plan to visit Bora Bora during your French Polynesian vacation.

Note:If flights from Tahiti to Bora Bora are too expensive, consider flying from Tahiti to Raiatea. Once in Raiatea, you can take a taxi boat over to Bora Bora.

The Wrap-Up: Tahiti To Moorea Ferry

Before going to French Polynesia, I was nervous about taking the ferry from Tahiti to Moorea. I didn’t know the exact logistics, which really worried me.

I hope this post brought you peace of mind if you’re planning to take the ferry between these two islands. It’s simple, affordable, and by far the best way to get from one paradise island to the next.
